Natural history of C282Y homozygotes for hemochromatosis: DISCUSSION Part 3

In: Hemochromatosis

5 Jun 2012

HFE geneBefore the availability of genetic testing, nonexpressing C282Y homozygotes were identified when an HLA-identi-cal sibling of a proband was discovered without iron overload. Genetic recombination was postulated in many of these cases, but it has been rare to demonstrate any conclusive recombinations between the HLA locus and the HFE gene. In the present study, we describe the natural history of nonexpressing homozygotes followed for up to 22 years. It is unlikely that an adult who has not accumulated iron over an average of 41 years (mean age) would develop progressive iron overload. Postmenopausal women have been considered to be at risk, but four postmenopausal, nonexpressing homozygotes were included in the present study. Annual follow-up is being continued in these patients and is recommended until further information becomes available on the natural history of nonexpressing homozygotes.
